Chapter 256: If Only
Confusion robbed Tamaes of any joy he might have felt. “Adin has been Sent?” His hands shook, and he felt light-headed. “Is that all Gabriel meant?”
Taweel quietly said, “If only.”
“You do not think so?”
“No.” With an aching heart, Tamaes said, “Adin has done much good. His skill is admired.”
“And yet …?”
Tamaes hung his head. “I have tried to keep him safe.”
“I know it. But you cannot stand guard over someone else’s heart.” Taweel set his fingertips against his apprentice’s breastplate and gruffly said, “We are each responsible to God for our own.”
