Chapter 179: Once Bitten
A sharp blow from Taweel’s sword hilt robbed the demon of consciousness.
Into the sudden stillness, Tamaes groaned, “He bit me.”
Taweel knelt to pry the slumped demon’s jaws from his apprentice’s arm. He dragged the limp figure to the pit’s other side, then returned to Tamaes. “Can you stand?”
“I failed.” Luminous droplets welled up between the youth’s fingers as he clutched at torn flesh. He whispered, “I am sorry.”
“Do not apologize.” Taweel hauled Tamaes up, then collected his sword. “The test fulfilled its purpose.”
“What purpose?” In bitter tones, he asked, “Pain?”
“No,” Taweel gently corrected. “Wisdom.”
