Chapter 56: If I Had Wings

“Help me reach the wreaths?” Weft pointed into the branches of the candle-tree that arched over their fountain.

Taweel knelt, asking, “How did you hang them in the first place?”

“A ladder. But if I had wings, I’d fly up.” The boy came closer, but didn’t climb on. “You have wings.”

“You know I do.”

Fingers lightly brushed the purple patterns on the warrior’s dusky skin. “May I see?”

Weft had indulged Taweel’s curiosity about Weavers often enough. “How close have you been to an angel unfurled?”

“Not very.” he daringly added, “Until now …?”

Taweel’s lips quirked. “Step back.”
