Chapter 277: Mister Ranger
As the spelunkers exited the caves, they passed a balding ranger keeping count. “… fourteen, fifteen, sixteen ….” Piercing eyes met Ethan’s over wire-rimmed glasses. “And one Guardian, slightly worse for wear.”
“You are the Caretaker.”
“And you’re too pale,” returned the disguised angel. “First time in the deep places?”
“Second. But … I heard something.”
A gentle touch imparted comfort and calm. “Hardly surprising. Many lurk in the lower places.”
Gazing after Zeke, Ethan said, “I must keep him safe.”
The ranger clasped his hands behind his back. “Trust what you can to me; trust the rest to God.”
