COUNTDOWN: 5 Weeks

COMING SOON!  There are 5 weeks left before the release of Book 2 in the Threshold Series. The Hidden Deep will be in bookstores on Tuesday, April 23, 2013. To count down, I’m doing a weekly post to share newsy tidbits, sneak peeks at sketches, and brand new story art. This week, I’ll show you what’s planned for the postcard!

The Hidden DeepHarvesttime is in full swing when Prissie Pomeroy learns that something terrible happened in her family’s orchard. With school back in session, the rift between Prissie and her friends widens while Ransom and his friends keep getting on her nerves. As Koji and Milo introduce Prissie to the rest of Jedrick’s Flight, she’s drawn increasingly deeper into their world and closer to its dangers. A kidnapped apprentice suffers. A chained door bodes ill. A tiny angel makes a big difference. A battle line is drawn. Everything Prissie thought she knew is about to change… again!

Postcard. Long before my love of reading developed into a love for writing, I was a letter-writer. My trove of stationary takes up two boxes in the storeroom. My collection of stamps is a testament to two decades of hording. And whenever we travel, my first destination in any shop is the postcard spinner. I’ve always loved “real” mail, so it makes a lot of sense that I began creating postcards for my books and stories. They’re for promotional mailings … for giving away at book tables … and for you if you’d like one! All you have to do is ask!

This week, I’m revealing the sketch for the postcard we’ll print for The Hidden Deep. I’ve known for a while that I wanted to put Ephron on this one, and I was completely thrilled that Hannah Christenson accepted the project. I’ve always been attracted to her artistic style, and she’s a treat to work with!

Press Release. This week, I helped craft this book’s press release, and I thought it might be fun to show you how a publisher spins things. (I cropped out the story summary since it’s the same as above.)

Author Christa Kinde follows up her fiction debut with the second in the four-book fantasy Threshold Series, THE HIDDEN DEEP (Zonderkidz; $14.99; April 2013).

Even more angels make their entrance in this continuation of Christa Kinde’s fantasy series for tweens and teens. While The Blue Door opened Prissie Pomeroy’s eyes to the spiritual realm, The Hidden Deep lures her dangerously close to its sinister elements.

Kinde’s gifted storytelling and richly-drawn characters will take boys and girls ages 11 – 14 on an adventure where eternity hangs in the balance. Kinde spins common courtesies and Christian traditions into an appealing tale that celebrates family and friendship while addressing normal struggles—cliques, gossip, bullying, rivalry, jealousy, and insecurity. THE HIDDEN DEEP sparks the imagination, but it also invites middle-schoolers to test their own ideals. Parents, grandparents, and teachers will appreciate the unwavering moral center of this story about a girl who’s struggling to understand her place in a much bigger scheme.

New Art! Since I’m already featuring Hannah’s art for the postcard, I thought I’d add another of her pieces to the gallery this week. This is called “Troublemakers” and features Marcus (two-tone hair, leather jacket) and Ransom (big nose, agile eyebrows), two of Prissie’s classmates.

Troublemakers by Hannah ChristensonHannah’s work is well-represented in my gallery—Prissie, Koji, Baird, Kester, Milo, Tamaes. (She also created The Apprentice Gate for my story Galleries of Stone!) Here are links…
