Chapter 112: Whistle in the Wind
Finding Alpheus wasn’t too difficult. Ethan only needed to follow his ears. Trills and cascades, tremolos and warbles—the big warrior’s whistling led him unerringly to the old oak at the front of the property. Leaves rattled in the icy wind, clinging stubbornly to spreading limbs despite the change in season; sparrows and chickadees clustered in the nearest branches, as if listening. Ethan waited for Alpheus to reach his tune’s end before calling, “Naomi is bundling up Zeke for a trip into town. Ready to fly?”
Alpheus reached for the sword he’d propped in a forked branch above him. “Always.”
