Rough and Tumble

A companion story to the Threshold Series
In The Blue Door, Prissie Pomeroy gets the barest glimpse of an invisible realm where the Faithful are at war with the Fallen. With Rough and Tumble, the point of view tilts into the heavenlies, and the story is told from a very different perspective! God’s angels serve Him in various capacities—Messengers, Protectors, Observers, and of course, Guardians. Meet young Ethan, the newest angel the Hedge surrounding the Pomeroy family farm, as he is Sent to watch over Prissie’s little brother Zeke.

CAST OF CHARACTERS:
Ethan works closely with the members of his own Flight as well as the Guardians of the Hedge surrounding the Pomeroys’ home. Are you having trouble keeping everyone straight? Fear not! Here’s a roster of the main characters, which I’ll update as new individuals are introduced.

Ethan is Zeke Pomeroy’s guardian angel. Short brown hair, light brown eyes, and pearlescent pink wings. Rather young for a Guardian, he doesn’t have much bulk—or confidence—but he’s not done growing. His weapon of choice is a sword. He’s apprenticed to Conrad, and they’re members of Tycho’s Flight. Ethan’s name means “steady.”

Conrad is Ethan’s mentor, and he helps his young apprentice watch over Zeke Pomeroy. Wiry black hair, black eyes, and wings that mingle shades of violet and red. He’s a formidable swordsman, sharp of eye, wit, and tongue. His ear has been pierced, and he’s a member of Tycho’s Flight. Conrad’s name means “courageous adviser.”

Tycho is captain of the Flight to which Ethan and Conrad are assigned.  It’s a battle Flight, mostly comprised of Protectors. Like the other cherubim under his watch-care, Tycho is an archer. Tall and thin, he has long, wheat-colored hair pulled into a high tail, and turquoise eyes and wings. His name means, “on the mark.”

Garrick & Yannis are a pair of Protectors who serve in Tycho’s Flight. These cherubim come as a set, with warm brown skin, dark brown braids, purple eyes and wings, and matching dimples. The surest way to tell them apart is by Garrick’s ear cuff, which designates him as a mentor. Although they’re nearly identical, there’s a staggering age difference. Garrick is one of the First, while his Yannis is only a few centuries old. They share a playful streak and often entertain their teammates with easy-going banter. Both are archers, but Garrick is also quite capable with a spear. In fact, his name means, “he who rules with a spear.” Yannis’s name means, “God is good.” [I'll update the art once the sketch is colored.]

Raz is an apprentice Messenger assigned to Tycho’s Flight. His mentor’s name is Verrill. Like most malakim, he’s a talkative, friendly sort. An angular adolescent with porcelain pale skin and a powder-puff of black hair, Raz is distinguished by his bright green eyes and wings. He and Ethan see each other daily because it’s a Messenger’s job to ferry meals to the other members of their Flight. Raz’s name means, “my secret.”

Lucan is Naomi Pomeroy’s guardian angel. He’s a powerfully-built warrior with dark skin, silver eyes, iridescent wings, and hair that stands out in wild corkscrews all around his head. Lucan is deep of voice, gentle in manner, and protective of all of Naomi’s children. In battle, he fights with a pair of swords. Apprenticed to Othniel, his name means, “light.”

Othniel is Lucan’s mentor, a burly Guardian with a shaggy mane of russet hair and bushy sideburns. He’s gruff, but a good teacher. Over the centuries, he’s been responsible for training several apprentices, and Time has taken its toll. Othniel looks the oldest of all the members in the Pomeroy family’s Hedge. His eyes are gray, his wings are dark yellow, and he’s armed with a sword. His name means, “lion of God.” [I'll update the art once the sketch is colored.]

Jomei is Jayce Pomeroy’s guardian angel. He’s tall and relatively slender, “built for speed.” With his long, yellow hair and spring green eyes and wings, Jomei’s coloring is reminiscent of daffodils. For a Guardian, he’s rather outgoing, comfortable with conversation, and conscious of his teammates’ needs. He’s apprenticed to Trumble and carries a sword. Jomei’s name is pronounced joe-MAY, and it means, “light.”

Trumble is Jomei’s mentor and senior member of the Pomeroy family’s Hedge. He provides leadership for the team, dividing the defensive responsibilities in order to keep the farm’s perimeter secure. He has a shock of silver hair, blue eyes, and slate blue wings. Slim and acrobatic, his weapon is a long staff with fan-shaped blades on both ends. Trumble’s a gentle-natured Guardian whose joy is full (meaning his charge came to faith). His name means “powerful.”

Verrill is Raz’s mentor, a Messenger with heavy responsibilities within the Legion to which Tycho’s Flight belongs. Because he’s so busy, this malakim is often distracted or even disoriented. His eyes are light brown, and his wings are a rich, chocolatey hue. Verrill wears his extremely long, green hair in an intricate knot, and he plays the harp. His name means, “loyal.” [I've added a temporary sketch. Art will be updated as soon as it's available.]
